Answer in your blog:
How have your individual communication skills changed with the innovations in technology?
Communicating online is very different than face to face. At first I made all the typical mistakes, too long, not to the point, asked to many questions in one email.
The first discussion board in class was very fun for the students but not me. Allowing attachments caused funky pictures, videos and music clips.
Things I leaned:
- Be very precise in what you are asking for - bullets help
- Only ask one question per email - the rest will be ignored anyway
- Do not allow attachment unless that is part of the lesson
- Get back to students as soon as possible
- Calmy explain to irate student that emails take more than a few minutes to respond to
- Set parameters to email use and stick with them
How have advancements in technology altered classroom communication?
- Yes, I can now 'talk' to my students from anywhere.
- I can send out a general announcement as a evening reminder.
- Free response must be checked for plagiarism
- Copyright rules must be stressed and retaught often
Will these change further?
- Yes, I do believe that for students who like to communicate online but not in a F2F classroom. I will get to know them better.
- Copyright infringement is goimg to be more and more of an issue.
- Students will be more creative about the way they create their work.
- More types of communication will be expected of both the teacher and student.
